How Globalization threatens Cultural Identity.
Globalization can be defined as a process by which national and local economies, social orders, and societies have gotten to be incorporated through the worldwide system of exchange, communication, immigration and transportation.
Cultural Identity is a key contributor to an individuals well being. Relating to a specific society group helps individuals to feel they have a place and gives them a sense of security. This essay would show how globalization is a threat to cultural identity, it also explains on the factors that threaten the cultural identity in the UAE such as the loss of Arabic language, foreign educational curricula and Media.
Despite the fact that, the significance of English as the most widely used language of globalization is perceived, Arabic is viewed as an essential piece of national, Middle Easterner and Islamic character. It is obvious that the individuals who are not familiar with English will be at clear disadvantage which leads to the fears of natives and governments seething that Arabic dialect is crumbling at a disturbing rate and adding to youth losing their personality, society and legacy (Tomlinson, 2013). Dialect is thought to be the most conspicuous piece of any society on the grounds that individuals use to communicate with and communication acts as an essential part in exchanging the social traits starting with one era then onto the next. Due to the fact that the over impedance of western society and globalization in the UAE, their dialect avoided and changed towards the English. As English is easy to learn effectively and rapidly, it caught and spread in the Arab district and surpassed the Arabic dialect which allowed individuals to lose their cultural identity and not want to communicate in Arabic (Morrow, 2007). Though dialects are turning out to be more minimized as they submit to languages, The United Arab Emirates identity is being lost through the utilization of outside dialects like English, Arabic is no more given the admiration it deserves. The reason behind this is the fact that Globalization, which is the movement of people, goods, ideas amongst countries and region, leads to the loss of Arabic Language (Hopkyns, 2014).
The second reason for threats of national identity is the rise of foreign educational curricula. In the UAE, the learning background has changed such that private schools outnumber state schools and more emirates are enlisting in government-funded schools (Bardsley, 2009). Though globalization of higher education claim they guard and preserve the cultural identity of the nation, but it does not occur constantly. The Schools are expected to have the obligation of saving and securing the national societies and prepare individuals for citizenship and serving the national, social and monetary goals which is not kept up in the UAE. The outside colleges in the UAE offer educational module that have little importance to socio-cultural morals of the country. They don't help in safeguarding and advancing Emirati society because the curricula may contradict with local customs and traditions and threaten the survival of Arabic language. Basically, globalization of foreign educational curricula is ending the one of a kind cultural identity of Emirati society as opposed to safeguarding and advancing it.
