- Describe the process you went through to arrive at the job structure. You should discuss the job evaluation technique(s) and compensable factors used and the reasons for selecting them.
I have used the point method to arrive at the job structure. I have evaluated the job descriptions according to job-based data. The reason I chose this method is “ the factors are scaled to reflect the degree to which they are present in each job and weighted to reflect their overall importance to the organization (Milkovich, Newman and Gerhart, p. 139). There are 3 characteristics of this method, including compensable factors, factor degrees numerically scaled, and weights reflecting the relative importance of each factor (Milkovich, Newman and Gerhart, 2011, p. 139). The compensable factors I have used are skill, responsibility, effort and working conditions.
“ Factor weights reflect the relative importance of each factor to the overall value of the job” (p.147). Different weight reflects differences in importance attached to each factor. For example, Job A position requires ability to learn proper use of knives, slicer, baler and hence is prone to hazardous environment. Hence I have allotted 4 to this factor. Moreover, I have further divided the positions into 2 categories, i.e. Management and Support, depending upon whether their duties have supervisory and managerial responsibilities. On the basis of the requirement of each position, I have calculated their points as shown below.
