Knowledge transfer is the transfer of knowledge from one department of an organization to another department in the same organization. It will seek to create, organize capture and distribute knowledge and also ensure that it is available for the people who will use it in the future. Knowledge transfer is in the field of organizational learning and organizational development. According to Argote and Ingram (2000), it can be defined as the process in which the experiences of one member of an organization affect the other person in the same organization. Knowledge transfer is not all about communication in an organization. It is more complex than that. One of the reasons that make it a complex undertaking is because knowledge in an organization is got from the member, their sub networks, their tasks and the tools that they use. In addition to this most of the knowledge in organizations is inferred and not coherent.
Research has shown that organizations that are able to transfer knowledge through the various departments are usually more successful than those that are not able to transfer the knowledge. An organization is one entity composed of different departments and thus it is important to make sure that there is proper knowledge transfer between the various departments (Svensson 2000)
The transfer of new knowledge especially from outside the organization is very important. In the radically changing world it is very important to ensure that there is the constant use of knowledge transfer is. People need to be informed on what is going on other organization and how they need to change. This process is especially important in ensuring that change is achieved in organizations. It also ensures that there is organizational improvement.
