Introduction:
“leadership skills are not gender specific” this what some people believe and argue. Some people think that women can be better leader than men in specific situations (Lowen, n.d). Also, there are many reasons that make women a better leaders than men; they are good listeners and strong, are more compassionate and helpful, are better at communicating and trusting, have an innate empathy for humankind, are committed to their responsibility, and have values relating and relationships.
Needs and benefits:
The aim of this study is to conduct a survey that recognizes the attitudes of people toward women leadership, in general, and in one of the famous women leaders (Princess Diana) speeches regarding Landmines in Angola. In addition, It aim to understand UAE’s society prospection regarding women leaders’ verbal communication and how it differ from males to females; also, to know if their attitude change toward the women leaders’ verbal communication after reading Princess Diana’s Speech. It also reflects the stereotype that most people believe in, which is that the emotional appeal element is the primary element in women’s speeches.
Scope:
In our study, we focused on Lady Diana’s speech and we did not take other quotations from other leader women in politics or any high position. Besides that, we distributed the survey to only 40 young educated people- men and women- and no old people were surveyed.
Methodology:
We did a survey and distributed it to 40 people from Zayed University and student’s families. The survey was made for two categories, 20 men and 20 women. It included a quotation from Lady Diana’s speech regarding landmines in Angola on June 12, 1997 (Princess Diana Speech):
and was followed by four questions as following:
Q1: Do you think that women leaders are better linguistic experts than men?
Q2: On what factor do women leaders tend to depend in their speeches?
Q3: What factor did Princess Diana use in her speech mostly to have an impact on the audience?
Q4: Do you think that this speech had an inspiring impact on the audience?
Findings:
We distributed a survey about leaders’ verbal communication and Princess Diana’s speech among 40 people, and we classified them into two categories; group (A) are male, and group (B) are female. We found a huge gap between their impressions about women leaders’ verbal communication and the Princess Diana’s speech.
