PERAONAL LEADERSHIP STATMENT
Interview with Mark
What is the first thing you should do as a leader?
Mark: Look in the mirror and asses what makes you a leader. After that stick to those qualities and carry them out.
What are the qualities of a good leader?
Mark: Authentic (they’re themselves), compassionate, being there for people, modeling the way, bold, trustworthy, and they are good listeners
What are the biggest mistakes leaders make?
Mark: They can be too controlling, and think what ever they do is the correct way. Not looking at themselves in the mirror before calling someone else out.
How can I become a leader?
Mark: Get to know who you are as a person and gain respect from being yourself. Have confidence.
Who do you think is a good leader and why?
Mark: Steve Yzerman, because he was himself and never put on a mask for anyone. He was prepared, lead by example, got the job done and played even though he was hurt in his career.
How do you know if you’re a leader?
Mark: You know you are a leader if you are teachable & authentic. You are not a different person for different situations. Also if people start looking after you.
Does a leader have to act differently then its teammates?
Mark: Yes at times, he needs to establish a presence in the locker room from time to time so that players will look up to him. If he doesn’t there would be no control.
Does being a leader mean never doing anything wrong?
Mark: Not at all. It means learning from your mistakes and never being complacent.
Do you think a leader should lead by example or vocally?
Mark: Depends on the person, every leader should have some degree of both. But every leader should especially be leading by example.
What are the day-to-day actions a leader needs to take?
Mark: Set priorities and goals so that they are at their best every day and they have something to strive towards.
I obviously chose you as a leader, what do you think, makes you stand out as a leader?
Mark: I think I am teachable and believe in being more and more authentic everyday. In the past I have showed many ways to be a leader and many people I know followed my foot steps.
