Managing Conflict
Any type of conflict arises when two or more people want to be in the same position; however, there is only one possibility that one person is in the right position. Often, everybody wants to be right about apparently irreconcilable arguments. Therefore, there is no longer fight by reason but by the desire to win. A defeat is considered as a personal degradation of self-esteem or prestige or fame, but in many cases an apparent victory can leave a trail of resentments that ultimately may result more dangerous than beneficial.
Jay Folberg states that “what matters is not how to avoid or suppress conflict, because this often has harmful and lasting consequences”. Otherwise, the aim should be to find a way to create conditions that encourage a constructive confrontation in the conflict (Mediación 56). Conflicts resolution is considered by specialists of management like one of the principal skills that a manager must have, at any level of the organization.
In the organizational field, the new approaches about conflicts consider that any kind of conflict is something that should be avoided. This may be harmful and destructive to the organization. Conflicts are interpreted as a normal phenomenon, inevitable and can become in opportunities, if these are managed productively. Conciliation is the mean that enables better culmination of any kind of conflict. This is the best feature of human beings to solve problems. The dialogue is part of this settlement and is the instrument by which humans resolve their differences the better manner.
Dialogue is an exchange between two or more people, who in turn express their ideas. The dialogue also opens new ways of understanding and allows expressing emotions, sharing concerns, asking for help or offering solutions. Its ultimate goal is reaching out new people and in many cases the dialogue allows to find an appropriated and civilized way to solve conflicts.
To establish a dialogue effective and efficient in terms of time between professionals it must be serious, honest and accurate. Only with this type of exchange is going to achieve a fair and respectful professional relationship by mutual benefit.
