Introduction:

Marks and Spencer is a Britain retail company that sells from electronic items to cloths, home furniture and food in the UK, Europe and America among other countries. The company believes in providing quality products at low prices. The company has almost 300 stores in the UK with almost 15% of total market share in clothing industry. The company did see a decline in revenues during 1990’s because the company did not adapt to the change in technological, social and economic factors resulted in M&S losing its profits and market share (M&S Press Releases 1999.)

However the company is still one of the leading and quickly growing businesses in domestic and foreign markets. In order analyze the potential of the company internal and external environment has to be examined and for that purpose PESTLE and SWOT analysis will be used. It is these internal and external factors that affect the company’s strategies. M&S operates in a competitive environment with Top Shop, Next, Debenhams, Warehouse, Sainsbury, Asda, Tesco and the Gap as their main rivals.

SWOT Analysis:

SWOT analysis tries to understand the Strengths and Weaknesses of the company along with the opportunities the company has and Threats they carry. SWOT analysis defines the core capabilities of the company but at the same time it explains the external threats the company has to face.

STRENGTHS:

One of the strengths of the company is that they provide quality products but at low prices which is the smart strategy considering the competition in the market they are in. They treat their employees with respect and they are also paid well. Choosing the location for the store is very important from the marketing and sales perspective and Marks and Spencer’s has always been on the high streets in London and in other places as well.
