Case 1: The Best of Intentions
Analysis of Critical Issues
In the first case study, Cynthia Mitchell faces many ethical problems. The strenuous complication of these predicaments are sources and combinations of variations of components. A discourse of these components, as well as closure concerning what Cynthia should do, present the base for this case study dissection.
The number one element that plays a powerful part in Cynthia’s dilemma is that she is a woman. Bill Hawkins got Mike Graves’ job and Cynthia did not. Research implies that a women’s occupancy in more advanced managing roles is slow-moving (e.g., McDougall, Marilyn, 1996). Further research (e.g., Liff, Sonia, 1999) states that some employment is better suited for men than for women. Together they conclude that men are the more likely candidate. These determinations are especially applicable to this case since Cynthia did not get Mike’s investment officer job because she was a woman. Instead Bill got the position.
The second problem presented in the case is regarding Bob Kimball and his retirement. Bob was considered to be retired a long time ago according to his co-workers. His region was in a difficult situation and suffered because he was too negligent with the sales team. He was coming into the retirement age and had not been very successful for some time… years. Cynthia was his replacement as District Manager. Research implies that retiring brings about higher chance of mental deterioration (e.g., Roberts, Beverly A; Fuhrer, Rebecca; Marmot, Michael; & Richards, Marcus, 2011).
The third problem stated in the case pertains to a job vacancy for two months. Bob Kimball portrayed prejudice and felt that Steve Ripley was unfit for the vacancy since he was black. Frank Romans backed this decision up. Frank stated that the clientele preferred not to conduct business with a colored man. Frank feared Steve would be unsuccessful in spite of his greatest intentions. Frank stated his failure would be because the clientele is prejudice. Cynthia hired Steve against Bob’s and Frank’s wishes. Steve was unsuccessful in his territory and some of the clientele shifted their business elsewhere. Frank questioned Cynthia about removing Steve due to racism even though he was putting forth his best efforts. Cynthia knew she would have to hire someone else for Steve’s position. She pondered moving Steve into a technical support job at the regional office. Research implies that people presume that occasions of day to day racism comparably influence the adversity of blacks, lead to impaired intellectual results… Prejudice is burdensome since it prevents admittance to possibilities (e.g., Deitch, Elizabeth A; Barsky, Adam;Butz, Rebecca M; Chan, Suzanne; et al., 2003). Other research (e.g., Hasford, Julian, 2016) states that young blacks are vulnerable non achievers (e.g., James, 2011). Further research (e.g., Marshburn, Christopher K; Harrington, Nicole T; & Ruggs, Enrica N., 2017) implies that prejudice can be ignored… and may go acquitted (e.g., Doridio & Gaertner, 2004).
