Nature of the Course:
Business Strategy is a capstone course that views a firm from the perspective of its top executives. During the course we will cover the field of strategic management and use a variety of tools to enhance our skills. We examine both the process by which corporate strategies are determined and the strategic options available to top-level managers. This material should help you understand much of the dynamics of today's business world, a world into you which you will be entering shortly.
This class is designed to be about discussion and learning. As business students and prospective business professionals, it is imperative that students understand the logic that underlies the patterns of strategic activities undertaken by their employers, their competitors, their suppliers, and their customers. Combined, those factors will influence how you perform your job and the job success you achieve. The material in this class assumes an understanding of the material in other business classes and a willingness and ability to think and participate.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, a student should be able to:
1. Define a business problem or challenge;
2. Perform a business situation analysis;
3. Solve business problems by describing, evaluating,
and selecting the appropriate functional, business,
and corporate level strategies;
4. Communicate business information effectively in
oral and written form;
5. Perform effectively in a work group, including
organizing, motivating, and evaluating group
