Michael Dell is truly an innovator in the sense of the modern world. This young man started taking computers apart to see how they worked at a very young age. While in college, Dell developed a passion for this, and started making computers and selling them to other students below what the big box stores were selling them for. Dell has a mission statement that reads, “To be the most successful IT systems company in the world by delivering the best customer experience in all markets we serve.” Dell has held true to this mission statement and decided to take his business full scale. The rest you can say is history.
Michael Dell was born February 23, 1965 in Houston Texas. Growing up, Dell had a normal child life. His mother was a stockbroker and his father was an orthodontist. His parents strongly urged him to study medicine but that was not where his passion was at. When he was 15 years old, he purchased his first Apple computer. He was amazed at how it worked, but that wasn’t enough for him. He decided to look deeper into it and see how it truly worked so he decided to take it apart. Dell was intrigued by what he saw and decided to see if he could replicate the components. While he was in college studying technology and business, he decided to start building computers for a few students and selling them at a cheaper price that what the other big box stores sold them for. The demand and overwhelming popularity of his computers pushed him to take the next step.
Dell was sitting in his dorm room and decided to go full scale and really make a name for him. The PC world was still relatively new, and Dell knew he had the inside track. He emptied out his savings account of $1000 and started building and selling more computers. He believed that he could offer the cheapest prices, but offer a strong customer support system that no one else offered. Soon his sales expanded outside of school and he dropped out to focus all of his efforts of his business. In the 1980’s, Dell started Dell Computer Corporation. The first full year the Dell Computer Corporation was in business, Dell had achieved $6 million in sales. Just eight years later in 1992, Dell was announced as the youngest CEO of f Fortune 500 Company. In 2000, Dell was considered to be a billionaire and achieved offices in 34 countries which employed more than 35,000 employees.
Dell Inc. is now one of the largest computer companies in the world. Dell has taken a stand to give back to the community by showing a green side to the environment. The Dell outlet refurbishes and sells 90% of all of the returned systems. The remaining 10% is resold for parts or recyclable material. Their goal is to become the greenest technology company on the plant. Dell is committed to improving its relationship with the environment and the community. In 1999 Dell and his wife Susan, started the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation that has given millions of dollars to natural disasters and people of them such as the tsunami victims in southern Asia. Dell’s mission statement, values, and passion clearly revel the company’s core purpose and what values guides its actions.
