Language plays a major role in effective communication which can get impacted many different ways. Examples include backgrounds, ages, and experiences. One example that most people experience is working with employees that speak different languages. It is difficult to train and inform employees of new information when neither of the employees share fluency in a common language. Common language may not necessarily mean a language from a different country. Sometimes the language barrier can present itself in the form of silence.
A real life example of the language barrier of silence presented itself during this week’s team assignment. During the initial phase of the assignment only two members engaged the team discussion. Another team member only offered minimal input. The fourth had not responded by Saturday evening. The language barrier of silence created tension, confusion, and concern. Enough concern to contact the instructor for assistance to reach out to the members who had not gotten so involved.
Why Communication
Team F chose communication issue for several reasons; Team members have had no open or responsible communication since the inception of the team. In week one, the team received instructions to “get together with their team immediately.” One team member started a thread with contact information. Another member tried to add their information unsuccessfully, and the remaining communication did not happen. In week 2, Team F had difficulties choosing a team leader and which section each member needed to write about. In week three, there has been no communication except between two members. One member agreed with the topic of communication barriers but did not select a portion to write. The last member did not respond at all until twenty-four hours before our team due date and did not select a portion either.
