I am formally an active duty member of the Air Force and currently working as a civilian and as a
reservist in the same job. The air force, as well as all military branches, not only teach you a job skill but also interpersonal skills. Many of the jobs within the air force forces you to work with a group or team of other people, on top of that you must coordinate work with agencies and shops. Not only is the job skills useful in the real world but it is the interpersonal skills that will help most in life.
While working with in the job, any job, the performance of a person within that job can vary based on the persons character and values. Things like a person’s attitude and work ethic can make or break a job. I know that the air force doesn’t get to really choose specific people for certain jobs. So we have work with a person’s attitude and work ethic to get the job done. The ideal person for the job that I am in doesn’t require but benefits from a person that shows initiative and a good work ethic that completes jobs in a timely manner. In my job there is a continuous flow of work with very little down time, so if one person is slacking it puts a heavier workload on the others. I personally work with a person that I feel has a bad work ethic. his attitude is that of a new generation teen, he feels entitled to many things and, at least to me, it feels like his time is the most important thing in the world. A perfect example of this is last week he was asked to complete a list of tasks by end of the day, he couldn’t leave till it was done. The list was only 4 or 5 tasks of small only one of which is hands on maintenance, the rest was cleaning as it was the end of the week. At the end of the day he completed all but the small maintenance and wasted several hours doing so, when he was told he could not leave he pretty much threw a fit.
