The majority of businesses are concerned with their bottom line instead of the health and safety of citizens whether it is in the United States or other countries. Changes need to be made but will companies agree to the changes to help the environment and the people of all countries where they have brought their business into.
There are many ethical implications of businesses polluting in third world countries. Human rights is a major ethical implication when it comes to businesses polluting in third world countries. These businesses are not thinking of the rights of the humans when they are manufacturing items that emit pollution either in the air, water or land. There is also possible pollution that is emitted by companies dumping unwanted items in third world countries. The effects of the pollution affects the residents in the areas where these companies are doing business. All parties are not treated fairly by the businesses since the employees are also affected by the pollution being emitted. This affects the employee’s health and also their family’s health which causes illnesses such as cancer. This is unfair to the employees just because the businesses take their operations into third world countries since the regulations are not as strict as in the United States and also they are able to pay the employees a lot less than they would in the United States. Individual’s actions in the businesses is an ethical implication as well. The decisions people make in business is a reflection on how they handle situations in their personal lives as well. A person should not behave one way at work and a completely different way at home. They should think about the consequences of the business decisions being made. They should also think how they would feel if they were in the people’s place being affected by these decisions and how they would feel if these decisions would affect their family like the families are being affected. The greatest human welfare should be considered as well. Human welfare goes along with human rights when it comes to making these decisions. Companies need to take into consideration and study the effects of the pollution that is being emitted by their businesses. They should make a decision to change their processes if their manufacturing processes or dumping will be harmful to the employees and the residents of the area. There is also the trust and accountability factor. Since so many people are now paying attention to the environment and making decisions based on how companies view the environment and produce their products, trust and accountability would be a major factor when it comes to the consumers deciding to buy products from companies. The common good is not adequately served if businesses are not taking into consideration the effects of the pollution being emitted.
