Importance of Directing

Haimann stated, “In order to make any managerial decision very meaningful and relevant it is important to convert it into effective action which every manager does by directing.”

The following are the Importance of Directing:

1. Directing gets things done. Theo Haimann said, “without the issuance of directives, without guiding and overseeing subordinates, nothing or at best very little would be accomplished.”

Directing is vital to get things done through others.

2. Directing initiates action. Planning, organizing, and controlling functions can be effectively performed when work is initiated through directing. Directing really initiates action.

3. Directing executes plans and decisions. Effective directing enables the proper execution of plans and decisions. Poor directing can nullify the effects of good plans and sound decisions.

4. Directing helps achieve coordination.  As stated by Haimann, “coordination is a necessary by-product of good managerial directing.” In fact, directing is one of the best techniques of coordination.

5. Directing helps develop future managers. One of the most important objectives of directing is to train and develop future managers. Through this process, subordinates are being constantly coached, guided, advised, motivated, and directed by their managers. Henceforth, subordinates are being developed by the managers.

6. Directing helps attain objectives. By effective directing, individual and organizational objectives can be properly obtained.

7. Directing facilitates effective organizational change. Normally, personnel resist change. However, through effective directing the personnel can be enticed to accept organizational change favorably.

8. Directing creates work environment. Through proper directing, managers can effectively motivate and mobilize personnel and influence their behavioral patterns. Therefore, they can create good work environment in the firm.

9. Directing motivates and mobilizes personnel. In the process of directing, managers can encounter many problems involving personnel. However, with effective directing the personnel can be best motivated and mobilized towards the attainment of the organizational objectives and goals.
