1.1 Company History
Research In Motion Limited (RIM), doing business as BlackBerry, is a Canadian telecommunication and wireless equipment company best known as the developer of the BlackBerry brand of smartphones and tablets. The company is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It was founded by Mike Lazaridis, who served as its co-CEO along with Jim Balsillie until January 22, 2012. Its current CEO is Thorsten Heins. In 1999, RIM introduced the BlackBerry 850 pager. Named based on the resemblance of its keyboard's keys to the druplets of the blackberry fruit, the device could receive push email from a Microsoft Exchange Server using its complementary server software, BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). The introduction of the BlackBerry set the stage for future enterprise-oriented products from the company, such as the BlackBerry 957 in April 2000, the first BlackBerry smartphone. BlackBerry is committed to responsible corporate citizenship and continues to focus activities on four strategic areas within corporate responsibility : community, environment, people and ethics. BlackBerry collaborates with teams across the organization to identify its stakeholder groups. We review this list annually to ensure we are reaching a broad spectrum of stakeholders who can contribute to the direction of our Corporate Responsibility initiatives.
1.2 Smartphone Business
The blackberry remains the most popular and widely used smart phone email device for business. A blackberry is similar to a mobile phone device, however has increased functionality to allow email, calendar updates, documents and other data straight to the user over the internet and the mobile phone network, to be sent and received while on the move. The Blackberry Enterprise Server software (BES) is installed on the mail servers in the corporate business network which allows communication over the internet to deliver data through a secured network. Both blackberry smart phones and BES are massive advantages for organizations of any size. It’s a cost effective solution and secure way of allowing employees to communicate effectively out of the office by increasing productivity, giving businesses a competitive advantage in a marketplace where every advantage counts.

Indonesia has undergone tremendous developments in terms of technology. However, the developments have not been as remarkable as other Southeast Asian nations. Nielsen Southeast Asia Digital Consumer Report 2011 illustrates this outcome: Internet penetration is only at 21 percent in Indonesia, and 67 percent in Singapore. Desktop computer ownership is significantly lower in Indonesia.Ownership of a Tablet Computer is practically non-existent in Indonesia and Vietnam. Regardless, Indonesia quickly became a growth opportunity for Research In Motion, As noted in the previous chart, ownership of an Internet capable mobile phone is much higher than Desktop computer and Notebook/laptop/netbook ownership. Mobile phone ownership is saturated, but the Smartphone market still has potential for growth and is evident in the Intention to purchase.
