Short-Case Management
There are a few ethical issues being brought to light in this case study managing up and across. The first of these issues is that the manager in this story needs to show honesty and truthfulness to Jessica in regards to her attitude and behavior that she is displaying at work and to the employees she works with. In any business, it is the manager’s duty to ensure that you know the working environment that is provided to your employees and customers. As a manager, Bruce has a responsibility to the company to not allow any type of hostile feelings or actions into the business. Another situation that Bruce is facing is that he is having a relationship with someone in the company, and Bruce will need to learn to not let his relationship with his fellow co-worker interfere with his management duties to his team.
Because Bruce has decided to engage himself into a relationship with a co-worker, he has brought to the table the ethical issue of fairness amongst his employees. Bruce should also address the issue that Jessica is not helping to carry the workload at work, but instead is letting her partner do all of her work. By addressing this issue, it would reflect fairness amongst the team. In order to resolve these ethical dilemmas that are now facing Bruce, he will need to have a meeting with Jessica to discuss her rude behavior and attitude towards her internal customers. I would ask that she make immediate changes towards correcting her behaviors, and to let her know that I cannot let a personal relationship interfere with my position in the company.
