The AtekPC Project Management Office
In recent days, PC industry had faced critical changes because their growth of benefit goes rapidly down and the market was in transition to the mobile, PDA, and tablet which are smaller and cheaper devices. People had not bought PC to use the internet anymore for years. Therefore, PC makers need to launch new strategies of their businesses and make a decision how to respond toward these changes.
Problem Statement
AtekPC had faced the challenges that have never seen before, so they sought to take a leadership role in this situation. John Strider, CIO for AtekPC, decided to create new Project Management Office(PMO) for the future. Although his team hired some expert people with experiences to implement PMO program, he had concerns about internal culture in the company and his limited resources to cover the many initiatives and responsibilities. So I can define three things of the problem at AtekPC to implement. The first thing is a difficulty to change their culture in AtekPC. Because, the PMO wants to move faster to achieve their goals and make milestones in the middle of projects, so they have potential problems to get conflicts with others. “How do PM lead smooth changes from own culture to improve the performance of new ways?” In this reason, making a relationship and consensus between PM and others in culture is very important during projects. The second thing is IT projects at AtekPC were managed informal approach without standardized practices. Over the years, that projects had not resulted in lasting formalization to provide rapid response to user requests within their workgroups with few conflict. Thus, they struggled with changing an industry that required larger, more complex scale. “How to train people to do standardized practices and formal process?” In my opinion, a difficulty to change their own way without reasonable issues is person’s characteristic. Therefore, It is more important thing in order to change people’s mind through training, mentoring and consulting. The last thing is selection organizational model between PMO-heavy and PMO-light. “which model is better for AtekPC?” For PMO-heavy model, the organization will have a full staff of project managers who assumed responsibility for managing all IT projects. For PMO-light model, a minimal staff of experts who worked through internal project managers to perform the responsibilities of the PMO.
