The Impact of Workplace Bullying
There is this young lady named Stephanie very quiet and timid at the work place. She loved her job and would not do anything to lose it. Stephanie came to work on time never missed a day and always smiled. What her coworkers and mangers didn’t know was that she was hurting inside. People would be so men to her because they knew she wouldn’t say anything. Sometimes she would go in the bathroom and cry because people would pick on her so much. Work place bullying is real and in the following paragraphs; I will Describe the impact of workplace bullying on both the victims and the organization. Reflect on a time when I may have witnessed workplace bullying. I will discuss practices of workplace bullying addressed in the article that were applicable to my scenario. Also, I will recommend at least two techniques from the article that management should implement to provide a positive impact on workplace bullying.
Workplace bullying is a problem and it a also be hard to detect and hard to speak of, generally because bullies form fear and intimidation that makes it hard for employees to speak for themselves (Amble, 2004). Bullying eats away at someones emotions, eats away at them mentally and somethimes pshyical. This in turn brings down the morale of the employees and once that happens its hard for the emploees to come together against the bullies (Amble, 2004). Examples of bullying include, but not limited to; intimidating people, yelling or using profanity, always being critical and making someone feel small (Amble, 2004). Most employess, care about their job and don’t like conflict of any kind. This becomes really bad when a bully is management, an empolyye will nt say any thing because they are scared of losing their job. When you have bills to pay or a family that needs and depends on you, standing up to a bully can end in a financial suicide (Amble, 2004).
Many managers are unwilling to address bullying for the same reasons that employees are (Amble, 2004). Managers have a hard time addressing bullies and sometimes feel that the employees can handle the problems themselves. This also has impact on productivity the persons being bullied spend more time trying to defend themselves, more time trying to avoid the bullies (Amble, 2004). This may lead to stress related illness and employees call off work which can cause low productivity. Bullying in management comes from managers being self-centered, selfish, and their employees small as they did Stephanie so many times. They scared her and made her feel small so many times just to hide their own insecurities and to make themselves look good. They crushed her confidence and integrity in order to make them feel like they have the power. They use this power to make their employees feel small (Amble, 2004).
