Bullying in the Workplace
Bullying is something that is used to intimidate others in the workplace. At my last job I was asked to work with an attorney until they could get him a new assistant. The last assistant was suppose to train me on his stuff but never did. I sent her numerous emails and copied him on each one. He worked as a lobbyist and some of that was included in his work. There was a report that was due a set time each year. I had no idea. He called my office and asked that I come to his office. When I got in there, he closed the door and proceeded to scream at me and throw stuff around the office. I took it because I needed my job. When he was done, I went back to my office and typed a letter to the firm’s Administrator. I reminded him that I had my own workload and was only helping the attorney. I described what just occurred and told him I felt threatened and could no longer assist this particular attorney. I was never asked to work with that attorney again but he walked past me for at least two years and never spoke. Talk about a hostile environment! A few of the attorneys did tell me later that I shouldn’t have reported him and should have just taken it because he was such a powerful attorney and brought the firm lots of money. This incident brings the verse of 2 Timothy 1:7 ESV, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control”. That attorney’s lack of self-control was pitiful to watch. The later assigned another paralegal to him. I watched him berate her, her Black husband (she was white) and her mixed children for years before she decided to quit.
