The Place for Diversity Multimedia Analysis

Culture is all-around us, and is not just religion or race but it is how people are different in many ways. In participating in the interactive multimedia exercise, I experienced that some of the individuals were harder than others to try and figure out. I found myself intentionally not choosing the individuals I thought that the majority would choose based on appearance; in some instances I discovered that I was wrong. For, example when I had to guess who Sally was I did not want to judge based on appearance so I did not choose her picture, even though I believed that it was her profile. My first instinct was that the other females in the first and second spot were too picture perfect, so instead I put my judgment aside and picked them first and “of course” I was wrong. My second thought when trying to make a decision was that the females in the first and second spot were too picture perfect, so I chose them over Sally hoping I may be wrong. I thought my first instinct was correct because Sally was the only one out of the three that was not picture perfect.

The other scenario that I observed was with Kim when she was explaining how her family struggled financially and in high school she was told that people with low income will never get very far in college. I assumed it was a male because society expects males to set an example for their family and especially if he is the oldest child of the family the expectations are high, males are also expected to be the “man of the house.” One other characteristic why I thought it was a male is that males dominate the technology field; and that has been my experience in my career.

The third scenario I without a doubt could clearly identify Chris, his profile described an individual who was not happy with his life and moved around. When reading his profile I got the feeling that he was a free spirited person and enjoys excitement. I saw his picture and immediately was drawn to what seemed to me a fun and outgoing person.

As I get older I have realized that although, I do have the tendency to judge, I do not judge everyone I come in contact with however; I find myself sitting back and observing their behaviors and actions. I work in the human resources department so I watch and observe many applicants who come apply and the judgments I usually find myself making is on their professional appearances or the lack of. The assumptions I will make is that the applicant is not very professional and will not be likely to follow the company dress code.
