The effects of diversity in the work place and neighborhoods of America.
Abstract
Due to the passing of time over the past 50 to 60 years diversity in the work place has grown to astronomical numbers. Today there are many different nationalities and sexual origins working together as one in the work place and it has come with its own set of issues. Can a group of diverse people get along and work together as a group in any work place? This paper will cover some of the issues that go along with diverse work groups and give the reader some firsthand knowledge and examples of the issues of this topic. Some of the example issues are: What has the diversity mix been (how have diverse groups been represented) in organizations where we work, Where we have lived and now live? Where we grew up? When we were growing up, and people’s interaction with diverse groups? What was the result or impact? Do we make an effort to learn more about diverse groups of which we are not a part? If so, how do we do this? If not, would we consider doing this? Which diverse groups? When we meet or begin working with a person who is a member of a diverse group we are not familiar with, what do we do? Do we sometimes tolerate bias or prejudice in the workplace, to avoid conflict? If the head of our organization or work unit said that the next open position would be reserved for someone who is: gay/lesbian/bisexual, African-American, Hispanic/Latino, or someone with a disability, what would our reaction be? What things should we do differently, in order to expand our diversity understanding and behavior? These questions and more will be answered in this paper to follow. The method that will be used is firsthand experience in working with and living with diverse groups for over 45 years. The data in this paper will show that not only has diversity grown over the years but why and how to handle it. America is the melting pot for all that want to live free and have a life of better circumstances for themselves and their children. So even though there are huge numbers of diversity in America's neighborhoods and work place it is possible to work and live together and in some cases it can even be very rewarding and educational.

I learned at a very young age that I would have to learn to interact
