Introduction
Just as people are not all born with the ability or talent to swim like Michael Phelps or sing like Justin Bieber, people are also not born with the ability to lead. Either of us was born with the super power to lead, and we all want to become leaders at different fields in the future. According to the American society of Training and Development, U.S. businesses spend more than $170 billion dollars on the leadership-based curriculum. (Mike Myatt 2012) With such a huge amount of dollars being spent on leaders training and our aspirations to become great leaders of large organization, it brings out the topic, training and developing leaders.
It refers to any organizational activity aimed at enhancing the performance and the quality of leadership within an individual or organization. Those activities are designed with step to step process that a person or a group of people need to pass in order to be a qualified leader or leaders. For any organization, business, society or country to grow and fulfill its potential, training and development is a vital tool towards achieving its goal. On the other hand, the leaders are also important as they provide an inspirational figure to lead groups of people towards great accomplishments. Great ideas were born from leadership because it inspired others to follow that same path, spreading out as it goes making even greater things happen. To be clear, the leaders we are referring are leaders in any levels and any fields. It can be Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, who is well known because of his determination, persistence, beliefs and courage. It can also be Drilon Doko, a Human Resource Representative at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce(CIBC), who were participated in our interview section.
In this project, it contains four main points that summarizes the “best practices” of proposed topic area, which are business games, case studies, role-play and coaching. Furthermore, we will thoroughly investigate and analyze the topic through an interview and past research on the specific steps needed to create great leaders. By doing this, we will then construct a step-by step training program that leader can use and implement on a day-to-day basis. After the interview section, there will be a key finding section that defines all the key findings from the interview. In addition, a section of improvements based on the gap between the best practice and key findings from the interview will be mentioned later on. At last, it will be the conclusion.
There will be some other major points will be mentioned include the difference between “training” and “development”, and how the training and development of leadership is different from training and developing leaders.
