- UPS’s sustainability committee has faced challenges and created a point of view, focusing on the power of organizational momentum and highlights “enlightened self-interest.” Many companies have the obligation to be involved in society and the environment, but should also benefit from their involvement and contributions. UPS set up at five-step approach so they can work towards sustainability so they can spread out the needs of constituents. Since UPS is differentiating themselves from competitors, consumers will see them not just as a company but a opportunity for their own organization. By focusing on the 3Ps(People, Planet, And profit) UPS is seen as a trustable and profitable company. When focusing on the people UPS they create profitability. When focusing on planet, UPS can expand while still being sustainable. UPS focuses on profit, as stated “ [we aim]… for maximum efficiency, minimum effort.”
- Internal and external stakeholders are very important to a company’s future. Internal stakeholders, such as the owners, employees and board of directors are positively impacted by UPS focus on sustainability as they receive profits accrued and the positive impact that they are making on the world. Internal and external stakeholders are negatively impacted by the emissions that are produced from UPS’s planes and other vehicles. However, external Stake Holders, are positively Impacted when UPS is involved in projects that help benefit the community such as UPS joining forces with disaster relief programs.
- Mr. Kuehn’s approach toward sustainability was influenced by political-legal forces. Political-legal forces change how politics can impacts laws and the laws impact opportunities and threats of an organization. Additionally, Mr. Kuehn’s Approach toward sustainability was influenced by technological forces such as UPS joining forces with disaster relief projects. It becomes productive when shipping costs are reduced when customer donations are combined. Finally, sociocultural forces were an influence to Mr. Kuehn too. Mr. Kuehn can profit on being sustainable as it is trendy to be sustainable and impresses the customers.
- The first approach, Utilitarian, is “ guided by what will result in the greatest good for the greatest number of people.” Shown by UPS’s willingness to make sure that disaster relief resources are where they are required in a timely fashion. The second approach, Individual, is described as “ethical Behavior… guided by what will result in the individual’s best long-term interests, which is ultimately everyone’s self interest.” This approach can be seen when Kuehn stated,” [he] embraces, ‘enlightened self-interest’” The third approach is moral rights, which is “ guided by respect for the fundamental right of human beings, such as those expressed in the U.S. constitution’s Bill of Rights.” This can be seen by UPS statement “ safety training for drivers in certain emerging economies,” which improves their employees quality of life. Lastly, the justice approach, “ guided by respect for the impartial standards of fairness and equity.” This approach is shown by UPS when government officials support their actions toward sustainability
- At the bottom of the Carroll’s model of social responsibility is economic responsibility which is doing what is required by global capitalism. In UPS 4th step of their 5 step approach toward sustainability UPS states they should build productive partnerships. Which means creating partnerships that help make profits for the company. UPS then has a legal responsibility, doing what is required by global stake holders. Working with the united states as well as foreign governments, UPS is becoming experts in how to obey laws. Next is ethical responsibility, which is doing what is expected by global stakeholders. This is shown when Kuehn says that he believes “ companies have a responsibility to contribute to society.” At the top of Carroll’s model we have social responsibility. His is doing what is desired by global stakeholders. By continually being sustainable they maintain high standards and integrity.
- UPS 5 step approach pays off as UPS accumulates “ capital, specialized knowledge and experience, relationships, processes, physical assets, as well as business acumen. Since UPS made changes within their company they are one step ahead of the competitors as they created trends that will benefit the company and the society. Since UPS has “ existing operations and initiatives… dovetail with societal or environmental needs for which others are already driving change.” UPS’s interests meet with the publics interests. Additionally, UPS created strategic alliances by “building productive partnerships.” Which produces monetary and sustainability benefits.
