WORKPLACE VIOLENCE
- Problem Definition
Employees are not feeling safe at work, facing aggression and assaults from coworkers, customers, or supervisors at their workplace in an increasing trend to the limit of becoming marked as “national epidemic” which cause a huge damage and ruining to the businesses and the society, leaving both, companies as well as victims and their families with lots of wounds and serious consequences including the legal actions.
- Justification for Problem
- Lack of implementation of proper antiviolence policies within the companies and organizations
- Unawareness of the at-risk employees who may commit violent acts from the company management which question the effectiveness of the Human resources management
- Unawareness of the importance of reporting about any threat or suspicious behaviors among the co-workers from the employees
- Failure to provide adequate security methods including metal detectors, security officers, proper reception for visitors to manager the walk-ins
- List of Alternative course of action
- Decrease the gap among the company management and the coworkers, and and to make them aware of possible changes to prepare them fairly to accept, and effecting the role of the human resources management in educating the employees with the work ethics either when dealing with each other or with clients or customers, especially those at the front line.
- Implementation of proper antiviolence policies, & security procedures including conducting regular psychometric assessment to beware of the changes happening to the staff , especially those whom could become at-risk employees who may commit violent acts as well as taking all security measures within a company to ensure the safety of a workers and the workplace
- Should encourage employees to report any threatening or suspicious behavior among each other
- Evaluate Alternatives
- Decreasing the gap among the company and the employees helps in crossing boundaries and understanding the staff workers needs, and trying to achieve these need to the best possible extend aiming not to leave any bad or hatred impression about the staff needs which could possibly be the cause of future workplace violence; it may however solve the problem fairly, but not firmly, and it will cost the company in proper compensation for the workers.
- Implementing the policies and security methods and conducting tests are ensuring the safety of the workplace as well as offering healthy psychologically staff, but again this might sort out the problem firmly, but not fairly, at least from the workers point of view, and it will cost the company but will not help decreasing the gap among the company and the staff which cause depression which could be the main reason of a workplace violence
- The report received from the employees of any suspicious behavior could help I monitoring changes happening on people at the same workplace but cannot reply upon solely since it does not help in cooperation among teams or same teamwork members, which might influence the production and the work quality, beside that this did not solve the roots of the problem
- Conclusion & Recommendations
A combination of the first two alternatives is the optimum solution which can solve the problem of the workplace safety fairly and firmly and will ensure the safety of the employees at their workplace
