vs This poem is telling us that ''a far cry from Africa", he describes Africa as far meaning that St. Lucia where Derek Walcott grew up was far from Africa. He could hear the 'cry' in the far from the winds that blow towards the island. Walcott highlights the various ways Africans were treated and how it is very inhuman and inconsiderate by the European men described by Walcott as " drunken officer'' to be so cruel to the African people. He also states that the European wants to be the high level people and want to enslave Africa and its people.
In the last stanza, we find it very interesting. Walcott feels guilt; he is confused in what to do since he is a mixture of African and European cultures. African symbolising the slaves while Europeans symbolising the British Colonel. He wants to take the side of the white men since he has more of that culture but he has no forgotten what they did to the other side of him by enslaving his ancestors (his grand-parents who were said to be a victim of slavery) and treating African people unequal and being biased towards them. This poem is telling us that ''a far cry from Africa", he describes Africa as far meaning that St. Lucia where Derek Walcott grew up was far from Africa.
