Books Are Not Obsolete

Most of the people in today’s world are too busy and preoccupied in various other activities and cannot take time to read. They prefer watching television and spend most of their times surfing through the internet. There has a long since been a debate as to whether books are obsolete and are of no use and significance in life of advancement and technologies. However, it is absolutely not true and is a fallacy because books have tremendous reasons to be the priority of each person even today. Regardless of having many other activities to do, people must take out as much time as possible and read. Books help to reduce stress, add up to the intellect, enable one to focus and concentrate, improve memory, provide literary skills and give a sense of curiosity, inspiration, and reflection exposing one to a wide range of language features and vocabulary.
Books have therapeutic and healing powers as they help to reduce stress and pressure. Stress is the chief concern for everybody particularly in the world today when people are facing adversity and difficulties because of social, political and personal issues and problems. The richness and rhythm of language has the prowess to soothe the mind, provide a sense of relief and respite ultimately ridding the body of stress completely. Thus books are perfect stress reliever as one can dissolve and get absorbed between the lines, verses and paragraphs and escape into a splendid and imaginary world where one easily forgets all predicament and anxieties. Books can considerably improve one’s memory and logic as they let people remember and memorize the entire process of reading from understanding characters and plots to analyzing themes and text. Maryanne Wolf explains “Typically, when you read, you have more time to think. Reading gives you a unique pause button for comprehension and insight. By and large, with oral language—when you watch a film or listen to a tape, you don’t press pause.”
Nothing can add to our intellect, rationality and understanding than reading a book. Books are significant tools as they enable readers to exercise their imaginations and general literacy expertise and proficiency. Books help cultivate literacy, which is a vital ability for people to possess so they can be politically and personally give power to to do things like vote, write and analyze, comprehend rules and regulations regarding things in different aspects and spheres of life. Books have knowledge, allegories and fables, insights into a contented life, useful subjects regarding life, love, dread, child rearing, prayer, worship and cooperative advice. One can interpret, examine and read about legends, myths, saga and romance, the formation of the world, present and future affairs regarding politics and socialism, and also about historical figures and leaders and big battles that they have fought.
