Costume Designs of Romeo and Juliet

The drawing and designing of the costumes took a few days, because drawing the costumes took quite a long time. The inspiration for my costume design was the fashion of the 15th Century. I think the designing was the most fun part of this representation because I was able to research the fashion trends and styles of the era of my inspiration. This era was filled with extravagances and extremes. It had long sleeves just like one of the dresses I have designed. Romeo and Mercutio's costume contained the doublets and hose of Renaissance Italy. The clothes are made of different fabrics such as wool, silk and silk velvet.

I made the choice to design costumes for Juliet and Lady Capulet for the Capulet because they are two of the major characters from the Capulet family. Romeo and Mercutio were the people chosen for the Montague side. Romeo and Mercutio were chosen as they once again are part of the main characters of the Montague family and also because Mercutio was the first to die in the play, and his death was the moment that triggered the series of deaths and unfortunate events.

Juliet was wearing the designed dress at the ball when she met Romeo, which is a significant part of the story as this was the part where she meets the other half of her ‘star-crossed lovers' relationship. Romeo's costume was also meant to be worn at the ball which happens in Act 1when he sees Juliet for the first time. Mercutio's costume was worn in Act3 Scene 1when he dies because that was once again a very significant moment in the story of Romeo and Juliet.

I enjoyed using my knowledge of Romeo and Juliet and applying it to the task I had to complete. About 3 days was spent assembling the assignment and writing the descriptions and the completing the reflection statement. I also felt that the things we had to write for our reflection statement were very similar to the things we were required to write in our descriptions of the costumes. Some
