DBQ Essay

Without change something or someone isn’t able to progress. The U.S. had just undergone the Industrial Revolution. Therefore, many changes occurred in the U.S. cities between 1850 and 1900 that impacted the changes on life in the cities such as: government dependency, new ways of transportation, a new form of politics, and the decreation of the rural population by which it grew.

Government dependency became popular during the 1850’s-1900. The people who was once self- reliant got comfortable. In document 4 is states “they now turned toward the impersonal government or corporation to provide them with water and heat,sewerage and light,elevators and elevateds, machine-made clothes and factory-canned goods.” (Robert H.Walker) That was a change for the cities because they were mostly a rural population who made their own clothes and got their own water. Document 2 states that “if a baby has outgrown its shoes, the size is sent to town.” Which demonstrates the government reliance.(Frederick Law Olmstead) These changing were happening because the people got so comfortable with government help it also created mass manufacturing.

Before new ways of transportation you had a horse and a carriage,a donkey, or just your two feet. During this er automobiles were invented and the train tracks were finished. It was beneficial for the cities and Document 6 explains why those changes occurred it writes “better transportation increasingly allowed middle-and-upper-class residents live away from their work and from the grimy industrial districts.”(Nash)

With a new city came new politics, no longer were they going to be handled local political bosses. Document 5 says “they provided food and money for the poor, fixed problems at city hall,and generally helped immigrants in their adjustments…”(Tindall and Shi) Politics really struggled through the
