The longer one has been in the workforce the harder it becomes to return to school. Family, work, and social obligations makes the decision to return to school a hard one. If one is to be successful in a degree program time management and embracing new technologies are the keys. Obtaining a bachelor's degree is important because it can open up more opportunities for career advancement. Though a (BA) may make one a good candidate for a potential management positions it does not necessarily guaranteed employment. In fact, with the increased number of professionals returning to school to get degrees it makes it harder to find employment. The opportunity for advancement and to make more money is the motivation for returning to school.
Providing for the needs of one's family may be one reason to postpone returning to school, another reason may be that one's current position leaves no time for studying.
Some organizations will allow one to advance or take a management position without a bachelor's degree but one may not get paid as well as someone who has no formal education. People in management positions have to be able to adapt to the changing needs of their organizations. If one cannot find the time to return to school they may be destined to become stagnant in their career.
Technology is making it much harder for one not to return to school. Most programs are now offering more options to working professionals. Online and evening classes make returning to school much easier. According to (Barrow & Rouse, 2005, p. 4), new technology is increasing the productivity of high-skilled workers. This leads one to believe that fewer jobs will be needed if the productivity rate of all skilled workers increases. Degree programs help students to become familiar with new technologies and business strategies that will allow them to become better assets to their respective companies. With fewer jobs available due to the increased productivity of high-skilled workers, it becomes progressively more important that one obtains the necessary skills to remain employed. If one does not remain current in his or her field it becomes very difficult to advance.
