Characterization in I Am Born Again
- Dunstan Changing Name
- Trying to figure himself out
- Individuation
- Who gives him new name? Why?
- Rebirth gives him the ability to escape negativity and loneliness
- The memoirs of Mrs. Dempster has a deep impact on him thus leading to the second miracle.
- Diana changes him name from Dunstable to Dunstan.
- Foreshadows Dunstan’s visit to Mrs. Dempster and his relationship development among Boy and Leola.
- “- and left Deptford in the flesh. It was not for a ling time that I recognized that I never wholly left it in the spirit.” (pg.105 – very last sentence). Deptford has shaped Dunstan’s childhood and it is the reason he is who he is.
- “; occasionally the horrible loss of personality, the listlessness of degradation, got behind them, and then we had to be sent to the rear to what were called rest camps;” (pg.67). War caused him to have a complete change of character.
- 1915-1917. First time away from Deptford and throughout the war, he is homesick and lonely.
- Transferred to France. Experiences fear and terror since most of Canadians were killed.
- Nickname – Deacon. This is because they assume him to be pious. He is able to earn the nickname Charlie by performing a Charlie Chaplin routine.
- His responsibility and introverted nature causes him to be promoted to sergeant.
Dunstan
- Dunstan is isolated throughout the war and doesn’t try to create relationships in this environment which is easy and encouraged.
- The sight of dead bodies causes Dunstan to be scared and he appears calm. He hides his emotions and doesn’t deal with them in any way.
- Very spiritual character
- Dunstan believes his loss of his leg was a result of his guilt in Mrs. Dempster’s injury.
- Very ashamed due to the fact he does feel sad for the loss of his parents

- Contemplative and curious about Dunstan’s emotions.
