Cantos III- Journey into Hell
All of a sudden I hear a deep, chilling voice “I am the way into eternal grief”. I look out in front of the extensive line of lost souls ahead of me all awaiting their destiny to find the disturbing figure that spoke out to all who await. I didn’t come here. I don’t belong here. I turn around to attempt to figure out where I came from. I run through the halls of the treacherous cave only to find no exit. We are all in this together. The crazy thing is, all of the souls around me are diminishing. Luckily, I seem to feel perfectly fine. There is no way that I am one of them. I continue my search for an escape route. At last, light! I sprint to that last little bit of hope. As I approach the light I see the outside world across a distant valley through a crack in the cave wall. The wonderful life I see that awaits across that valley. As I look down, my faith diminishes; I see a never-ending pit swarming with the useless souls that fill this place. There is no hope of going back to reality, back home. As I’m rushing through the cavern I come upon a long hall. I hesitantly approach this hallway and notice someone coming toward me. It’s something horrid, perhaps even decaying away, but I continue toward it, as it continues towards me. I begin to realize something devastating. The figure at the end of the hallway is me. What used to be a young, healthy man has begun to decay. I am one of them. We are all in this together, we are all damned for eternity.
