Book 1 Questions

Book 2 Questions

The suitors believe that Penelope is toying/messing with them.

There were two different interpretations of the Omen. The first interpretation was on pg.98 when Halitherses says Zeus is saying Odysseus will return home shortly. The second interpretation was on pg.99 when Eurymachus says they are just birds, but then offers his own prophecy: Telemachus will be hurt and Halitherses will be fined.

When Antinous wanted Telemachus to force his mother to choose and said that Telemachus should forget that he and his mother have been wronged and just feast with the suitors Telemachus refuses on all accounts. Then Antinous says Telemachus will die on his journey.

Book 3 Questions

Athena helps Telemachus prepare for Nestor by disguising herself as him, casting a spell over the suitors to make them fall asleep, and procuring a ship with supplies. She also helps him by giving him the confidence and assertiveness to take action against the suitors.

Telemachus asks Nestor about Odysseus. Interestingly, Nestor, in recalling how Odysseus was unsurpassed in his ability to provide excellent "counsel", observes that Telemachus reminds him of Odysseus. With no information to give him, Nestor sends his son, Pisistratus along to accompany Telemachus to Sparta.

Telemachus gains greater confidence in his ability to speak, which was a skill his father seems to have passed along to him. He also learns to trust in the gods to provide him with wisdom at the right time.

Book 4 questions
