Introduction
The spread of information technology have a significant impact on the English Language learning processes in most schools as it encourages the students in their learning. Most schools across the world have opted to the use of information technology and internet in the class room since it has proven to be very effective (Smith, & Baber, 2010). There are many reasons as to why the use of email is necessary in teaching and learning English. In this paper I will try to discuss the various issues that are related to implementing email as a teaching and learning tool. It will discuss the various benefits, challenges and how it can be abused by children in the course of their learning.
Computer-Assisted Language learning which referred as CALL is used to illustrate any type of Language Learning activity that uses computer technology. Email is one of these technologies that are widely used in teaching English language.
Through my research on the impact of the use of email on students, it has changed how they communicate and learn. The learners learn English language in different ways and at different periods. To understand and meet their needs, the ESL teachers will need different delivery methods that they can use in the E-learning programs. For a very long period of time the press has always explained about the dangers of email and has resulted in some learners to shy away from the use of the email in their study (Smith & Baber, 2010). In this paper I will try to explain how the use of email is a powerful tool that lies in students’ hands.
The viability of application of email to the English teaching centres
There are several features of email that suits it for the teaching and learning of English in various education institutions. Email has the capacity of sending large amount of information in a convenient way. It is a very powerful tool that is easy to understand and to apply. The current English emphasises that a learner should have some vital skills such as; writing, speaking, reading and listening. This necessitates for a method of teaching that the teacher and the student will interact frequently (Smith& Baber, 2010).
I have also learnt that E-mail can provide good enabling environment for the learners to study English. It also enhances the students’ culture of independent Learning. In the past before the use of email, the teacher would answer all the students’ questions when still in the class room but the student didn’t have a chance to ask questions outside the classroom. This would hinder those students that are naturally shy from asking questions. This group of students can communicate with their teachers and fellow students through email which will boost their performance in English.
