From ancient times to modern days, human body has always been a most commonly used object that artists used to express their ideas. To many of those artists, Famous Biblical figure a young boy David who defeated Giant Goliath must have been an attractive, inspiring model to depict. This story of David and Goliath has been captured by many artists such as Verrocchio, Donatello, Michelangelo and Bernini. In this essay, I will compare and contrast Michelangelo and Bernini’s versions of David.
The Biblical story of David is still very well known. A young shepherd boy David is challenged by Giant Goliath. It seemed obvious that David was to be killed. However, David won the battle just with a small rock and a slingshot. It is a very dramatic event and therefore became popular themes to depict. Although Michelangelo and David lived in different artistic era, their pieces have something in common. Both of them are commissioned artworks. Michelangelo and Bernini depicted different stages of fight, but their purpose to show the viewers of David’s underdog nature, courageous mind was in common. Both pieces are very detailed and depicted in anatomically correct when compared to earlier sculpture of human bodies.
Michelangelo’s David is one of the most famous Renaissance artwork. Michelangelo began to build this 17 feet tall marble sculpture in 1501 and completed in 1504.
