Culture, derived from the Latin word ‘colere’ which means to cultivate and nurture, has many multifaceted meanings that harbor to varied contexts. But essentially culture is the identity (i.e., characteristics and knowledge) of a distinctive group of individuals, and comprises of their physiognomies like language, religion, cuisine, behavior, music and arts. People from a similar culture share common experiences and have similar cognitive construction for understanding things, thus they act and behave in a similar manner residing within the bounds of their cultural limits. Culture can either be inherited or acquired; Inherited cultures is adopting the ways and understandings of the race, nation, religion or class you are born in and acquired culture is when someone moves to new geographic area with different culture and adopt their ways or when people elevated/scatter themselves away from their inherent class either economically or socially. The origin of culture can be largely affiliated with the human evolution. Referring to Charles Darwin’s theory of ‘Survival of the Fittest’ as Homo sapiens feared extinction, they realized that optimum way to persist is to live in groups and share duties. Thus started the age of socialization and community building, people got divided into tribes, each having their own unique ways and behaviors which were influenced by their surroundings and their day to day changes. As era of civilization started, there was dire need for a way to communicate thus, trailing pre-linguistic systems such as wall gesturing and carving shapes, came languages. These languages were highly adaptive for the various civilizations and largely attributed to the environment and varied folk of people. Furthermore, as various tribes started enhancing their interaction with their surrounding environment they made some startling scientific and psychological discoveries to coup up with their necessitating challenges, over time these methods and apparatuses got deeply carved into their culture. According to Maslow’s theory of needs, as the Homo sapiens across the globe were able to fulfill their physiological needs they quested for other physiological desire, thus came the advent of music and arts. As evolution continued people learned more and more methods to adapt to the environments. These methods which included languages to communicate, religion and behavior to ensure social harmony, cuisines to cater to local prey and arts and music to ensure psychological well-being all got deeply imbedded into way of doing this, and thus emerged the concept of culture.
