An empire has to be tolerant to rise, which is what Chua discusses in the book as her thesis. Tolerance is where one empire accepts different racial, religion, ethnic groups and treats everyone equally. When tolerance reaches the climax, or tipping point, it leads to intolerance, which causes a lot of conflicts, hatred, violence and the fall of empire. Amy Chua discusses the different examples of hyper powered that were present in world history. Chua explains the rise, fall, achievements and failures of the past powerful nations. She explains the rising process of the world changing and its dominance power through the word "Hyper power" in this book.

The Achaemenid Empire was the first hyper power that Amy chua discusses in part 1. Cyrus the Great found the Achaemenid empire. Cyrus became king after taking control over the Median Kingdom in 539 BC.Cyrus left the kingdom over to his son Cambyses, whose ruling period was from 530-522 . Darius the third was the last Achaemenid king,he ascended the throne in 336 BC.A power was growing in Greece during his ruling.Alexander the Great,Phillip's son conquered the Achaemenid Empire after six years of his fathers death. The Persian empire, was now over.

The stories of Xerxes include him desecrating temples and sanctuaries, killing priests, and enslaving subjects. The eventual downfall of the empire is believed to be because of the increasing brutality and repression of the last kings provoking violence.
