Changing US approach to peace making 1914-1918
Initial approach – neutrality + push for peace (“peace without victory”)
Circumstances pushed US into war – no longer able to be neutral mediator
As a combatant, aimed to “make the world safe for democracy”
Different Allied aims: Britain & France vs US > Wilson’s 14 Points, Jan 1918 - “only possible program for peace”

open diplomacy / no secret treaties
freedom of the seas
free trade
reduction of armaments
independence for colonies
self-determination for nationalities and peoples
an association of nations to guarantee the independence and security of all nations
