A Gift to Mom

When I was seven, I asked my Mom if she wanted anything for her birthday. Perhaps, she liked to have a chocolate cake? Or maybe a handmade greeting card from me? But, her answer came in a form of warm hugs and playful kisses. In the end, I didn’t get her anything.
Until then, I kept on bugging her. If she can give me a present for my birthday, why can’t I do the same? In my young mind, I can make the best of gifts! I can shower her with my personal coupons: free hugs, free carwash, free massage, etc. But her reply was always her sweet smile.
Thirty years passed. I was now a successful businesswoman. I didn’t miss Mom’s birthdays, not even one. For me, it’s as special as any holidays in the calendar. Of course, I haven’t forgotten my tradition to ask my Mom for what she wanted in her special day. I thought that she won’t respond in plethora of words, but she surprised me.
She led me to the garden and we sat on the wooden bench. It was a peaceful day.
“I never inquired you for anything because I already have what I want, s-sweetheart,” Mom told me, her voice cracking at the end. “And He gave me more than what I deserved.”
“What do you mean by that, Mom?”
“Before I go to sleep, I pray that He’ll grant me another day to live . . . just to witness you grow beautifully, not perfectly. Even though hundreds of problems were thrown in your way, you’ll still pave another path just to solve it. That’s what I admire the most about you, sweet. You never gave up. You’re not a quitter.”
“M-Mom . . .”
“And up until now, He’s still granting my wish. I couldn’t ask
