Final Career Assignment
Part 1-
There are many advantages in majoring in Engineering. One of the major advantages is the amount of opportunities it provides students with. Engineering is and will continue to be a field that is always in demand for new workers. In the future I am planning on graduating with a degree in Biological Engineering from Louisiana State University and furthering my career as a Biomedical Engineering at University of Texas in Arlington.
Biomedical Engineer’s have a variety of different duties they do. There are different fields with in biomedical engineering. There will be some engineers that design products and systems, such as artificial organs and devices that replace body parts. Then, there are some that work with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists to research the engineering area of biological systems of humans and animals. Biomedical engineers design electrical circuits, software to run medical equipment, or computer simulations to test new drug therapies.
There are a few industries that have employed to most biomedical engineers in the past and the top three were: medical equipment and supplies manufacturing, scientific research and development services, and pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing.
Personally, I am interested in working with specialized design services. Engineers that work in specialized design services are trained to design products that will help a patient or someone who is in need. These products will serve to do a total of many things. Some of these products include prosthetics, pacemakers, and artificial organs.
The highest paying biomedical engineering industry is the specialized design services industry. The annual mean salary is $115, 300 and supplies the most jobs in California, Texas, Florida and Minnesota. The salary for experienced biomedical engineers in the specialized design industry is around $174,940.
I have read around to see employee’s feedback on specialized design service industry. The employees seem to be happy and content with what they are doing. I am interested in more than just how much the job pays. Working on specialized products is something I have been interested in for a while and got a higher interest when deciding what I wanted to do with my life.
Overall, doing research throughout the different industries of biomedical engineering I have decided on specialized design services. The engineers seem to be happy about their jobs, the salary is in a range I was looking for, and it turns out to be something that really interests me.
Research-
1. Duke University is currently working on a research project using biomedical imaging. This program features expertise in the construction and clinical evaluation of novel imaging methods. The imagine research at Duke focuses more on photonics, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, x-ray, and nuclear medicine. Research encompasses area such as detecting early stage cancer, helping clinicians determine if tumor excision margins are cancer free, or diagnosing vision-related problems.
