Would you rather watch a show that is entertaining, or a show that’s more informative? While few would say informative, it is pretty obvious that entertainment is a big factor when it comes to media. Reality television is designed to be entertaining while highlighting personal drama and conflict. This form of television comes with many different forms which is why there are so many diverse audiences. In competition based reality shows, there are other common elements such as one participant being eliminated per episode, a panel of judges, and the concept of freedom from elimination. Reality television is entertaining because the drama catches people attention, humiliation, and viewers can relate.
Who doesn’t like a show that snatches your attention? Reality Television is enjoyable and it provides viewers with the opportunity for quality entertainment. Most audiences seem to be interested in entertainment that involves drama, humiliation, embarrassment, arguments etc. No one wants to watch a boring show that simply involves staged acting and predicable actions. We as viewers get a kick out of unplanned situations and reactions. That’s what makes it reality. When a cast is brought together in one setting, and is then forced to live amongst one another, it is more amusing to watch cliques form and drama arise naturally because this is what grabs our attention. Rehearsed reality isn’t that entertaining because it already preset.
Jersey shore was a reality show which consisted of eight individuals living together for the summer. Controversy arose at the shore regarding the portrayal of Latin-American stereotypes; and just your basic drama concerning back-stabbing, lying, betrayal etc. The reason this show was so successful was because it included all of the amenities that the people want to see i.e. drama, profanity, violence, and love. Hence the reason that it was the network's most viewed series telecast ever. It is inevitable in the television industry to produce a show that draws your audience in. A show/series that leaves us with a cliffhanger forcing us to want to watch the next episode. I know that when I am really interested in a show, especially a reality show that premiers weekly, I can’t wait to get home to my television. Shows like these are the shows that produce a good amount in revenue because they attract a wide variety of audiences as well as providing great entertainment.
Some can debate otherwise and mention how reality TV can capture the attention from the wrong crowd. For instance, young teenagers and children are watching reality shows that are for a more mature audience. The younger generation may get the wrong impression and gain a wrong mindset since it is easier to manipulate an undeveloped mind.
