Graduation Speech
Middle school is a beginning. An introduction into adulthood. We are given new opportunities to expand our horizons, to look at all the possibilities into our future. It is also a transition stage between our childhood and being a young adult. We are given more freedoms than elementary school, but many of the decisions are still made for us. In middle school we get an idea of what our adult lives could be like but we still don’t know exactly how we might feel, or how we turn will out in the end.
When we entered sixth grade we didn’t know what to expect. When the older kids, the seventh graders, walked by we thought we were so cool if they happened to talk to us. 2008 was a year of firsts for us, first time with different classes, first time with more than one teacher, and even the first time with an African American president.
It was a hard time, almost everything we did was harder. The classes were harder, getting organized was harder, and the homework was defiantly harder. Even some of the substitutes were harder, like Ms. Debrusie who kept students in order using a ruler. Even though it was one of the hardest times of our lives when the last day came and everyone was signing yearbooks wishing their friends a good summer, it was sad time to be leaving all the friends we’d made, knowing we might not see them for a few months.
When we came back after three months of fun and sunbathing the last thing we wanted to do was homework. We got reacquainted with all of the friends we’d made last year and it was a good time. But soon after that the homework started coming, twice as much as much as last year’s. Even with the homework seventh grade was better than sixth because we got more freedoms, the teachers started to trust us more, and there was even more choices in sports. The rest of the year was around the same as sixth grade, except the classes were harder and the part about dissecting the frog.
