The way that we fight war now is much different than we used to before
We have adjusted to todays form of terror
6 types of war
- Hegemonic War
- About controlling world order (ex. World War 2)
- Millions of people killed
- Civilizaions collapse
- About establishing a new world order
Firesale: everything has to go
*Attack technology grid and get access to the internet and shut everything down
Ex. Banking, traffic lights, etc.
- Total War
- One state wanting to occupy another state
First place to go is the capital (ex. Iraq War – went to Baghdad)
- First place to see this was during the Napoleonic Wars
- Limited Warfare
- Short term military objective
- Border wars
- Successful one was when Iraq invaded Quake (1991)
U.s got involved, gave a 24 hour deadline to leave, Iraq Refused, U.S entered to remove Iraq and left

C. ex. Iraq War → they would dress as civilians
U.S not expecting this and had to make a dramatic change
U.S not good with hearing about civilian casualties
The troubling thing about war
- It suspends the basic norms of behavior
- International relations is about keeping a decency and norm
- Humans come back different
“Survival of the fittest”
War level of analysis
- Soldiers
- Do leaders want a war
- Domestic Level
- Look at the countries, democratic countries don’t go to war with other democratic countries
Democratic Peace Theory
- Global Level
- Usually, large wars are connected to prolong economic depressions
Causes of war
- Conflict of ideas
- The most difficult to deal with
They are intangible, its identity, religion, identity politics
- Historically all major wars are based on identity issues
First type: Nationalism
