Travel Restrictions
Felons who wish to travel outside of the US foremost face the challenge of obtaining a valid passport or renewing one if it has expired.
Felons engaged in international drug trafficking, or those on a federal arrest on felony charges are considered ineligible from obtaining a valid US passport.
The US Government states the following for ineligibility for obtaining a Passport:
In general, a passport may not be issued to an individual who is
• Convicted of a Federal drug offense, or a State drug offense, if the offense is a felony.
• Imprisoned, or is legally required to be imprisoned.
Furthermore the US Government also prohibits a passport application to felons during the period of their imprisonment or while they have an active or pending legal case against them.
Any felon who is on parole or on other supervised release after having been imprisoned as the result of that conviction are also considered ineligible for a passport application.
Once the felon has served for their conviction, the felon is allowed to apply for passport to travel outside of the country unless they are convicted of aforementioned international drug trafficking or nature of felony due to which eligibility for a passport is terminated.
