Trait Theories

Traits can predict leadership and do a better job predicting the emergence of leaders and the appearance of leadership than actually distinguishing between effective and ineffective leaders

Not every leader will have all the personal qualities and characteristics

Identifying the desired qualities for leaders I current workforce and working with those individuals to transform them into leaders

Trying to put an employee in a leadership role that has no desire nor any leadership qualities

Behavioral Theories

Used they would be able to train leaders with specific behaviors.

Just because a person has the right behaviors to identify effective or ineffective leaders they do not guarantee success

Taking individuals without any real leadership qualities and giving them the needed training to become an effective leader

Having a trained leader not utilize their training and manage without care

Contingency Theories

Asses based on the level of support

Very complex and lots of variables

Leading a team in which you have gained their trust/respect/and confidence

Using your position and power as a leader in a negative way such as denying raises because a team member disagreed with your opinion.

Leader-Member Exchange Theory

Allows to build a relationship with employees who the need a closer bond

“in” and “out” groups cause negative work attitudes and higher level of withdrawal

Taking some of the under performing team members and making them part of the in group to increase out put and gain more job satisfaction

Punishing team members that you may not like by making them part of the out group

Charismatic and Transformational Leadership

Ability to influence followers

Allow personal goals to come before the organizations goals.

Sharing a vision and getting buy in form employees to see the vision and obtain it

Using the leaders influence for person gain and doing so without group knowledge
