Media & Pop Culture
Final Project
For my final project I chose to write about the movie Anchorman. This movie starred Will Ferrell where he used comedy while giving the news. The movie deals with a lot of the principles of media literacy and showed how different the news can be delivered to the viewers.
Media are Constructions
During the movie, whatever Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) said during that time he was giving the news was actually true. Even though this movie was a comedy and a lot of the things he said we really would not believe, I do believe that this is true. A lot of what we see on the news we do believe even though they could have change what really happen or only give one side of the story.
Most all of the news stations across the country read off of a teleprompter so that they do not have to memorize all of the stories every day. Somebody changed what Ron Burgundy was supposed to say at the end of the show. He read whatever the teleprompter said and that ended up being a cuss word that you never said during the news. This would not actually happen in real life because everyone should know better than to say that word even though it is on the teleprompter.
Media Representations Construct Reality
The movie uses one scene where there is a big fight between five of the areas news team. I think that they are making fun of how the media always make the world seem violent. This proves that we like to see the violence because it is a very funny part in the movie.
Audiences Negotiate Their Own Meaning
Different ethnics groups may comprehend components from the news differently than other groups. This is why the movie has different news teams for different cultures of viewers.
When we the viewers watch the movie, so people are going to laugh and think different parts are funny then others. It depends on our culture and what we really grew up around that we use to determine this.
