Urban Sprawl and Public Health

In the article “Urban Sprawl and Public Health”（Howard Frumkin.2001) .The author outlines the physical and mental effects of urban sprawl. Firstly, the writer describes the effects of automobile reliance and points out that increased use of vehicles causes a large number of air pollution. This will bring some physical illness to people. In other words,people who are susceptible to infection and people with respiratory diseases will increase mortality. Especially the elderly and young people lack of immunity .Moreover, Frumkin claims that Global climate change will threatens people's health in a variety of ways. This is due to a lot of people use private cars emit carbon dioxide. However, land use is another considerable issue of urban sprawl. Because of the people lack of physical activity which is danger for people health.If the road is more sufficient than sidewalks and trails, people will choose to walk or ride a bike.This means that the reasonable use of land, the people must focus on land management should be increased physical activity. Consequently, amount of using cars and land management could affect the urban sprawl effectively.

With the development of motorized urban sprawl, social effects plays a important roles in the urban sprawl. The most fundamental reason is that people can enjoy nature.The people who live in suburb areas is more beneficial to people's physical and mental health than in urban areas. In addition,The author states that road rage and commuting stress has become a regular part of the daily routine for most workers. This will impacts on the mental health of workers and families.
