What's a Measurement?

Measurement is a process of assigning numbers to determine the size of a thing whether in inches, pounds, and minutes. A thing is given a commonly recognized symbol that signifies the specific amount of the physical quantity. For measurement, a number is written before the unit that indicates how many times the predetermined amount of the physical quantity is meant. Many systems still in use today were based on the use of parts of the body and the natural surroundings as measuring instruments. Primitive societies used rudimentary measures for many tasks: constructing dwellings of an appropriate size and shape, making clothing, or bartering food or raw materials. Units of measurement were among the earliest tools invented by humans.

Systems of measurement

Traditional systems were often based on the dimensions of the human body therefore varied from region to region. The metric system is the most commonly used as the international standard today except in the United States where the US customary is the standard. The above systems are based on arbitrary unit values, but the natural unit is based on standards that occur naturally in science. Their physical constants remain the same and therefore their numerical value is exact. The base units of a set of natural units include definitions and values for length, mass, time, temperature, and electric charge.
