In society today we have many social policy issues. Social policy consists of a government initiative, program, or a plan intended to address problems in society (Schmalleger, F). Many policies fall thru due to lack of support or knowledge by either the voting people or Congress. For many years the United States has had an issue with Prostitution, ways to lower the issue at hand could be creating laws that higher penalties for prostitution, or possibly legalization. With these ideas it would reflect on lowering the numbers of prostitution within the United States on the immigration routes.
By increasing the criminal charges of prostitution this may decrease the opportunity for illegal immigrants to cross over the border to think that they can make a quick dollar, but it could also become an issue with overpopulation in the jails in the smaller cities. By adding more penalties to prostitution laws, it would make individuals more accountable yet hesitant on pimping out women or women coming from other countries and turning to the streets for employment within the United States. Some states have gone as far as making the people who are caught for prostitution to forfeit the money to the law enforcement.
By legalizing or regulating prostitution it could be something that could accommodate the issue at hand. By regulating prostitution to licensure or registration and to only specific areas, and have them only employed by taxed business; would help reduce harm to the women while working and ensure some form of safety (law.missouri). With legalization of prostitution many of the women would be more apt to adhere to the regulations as being tested on a regular basis and other stipulations the state or government may make.
