“For Colored Girls”
Directed by Tyler Perry, this play-based film had a very explicit theme. The story was based on several different women’s lives, all somehow intertwined as they go through extreme problems in their person lives. This film dealt with family issues, domestic abuse, rape, abortion, cheating… pretty much any issue that could affect a women’s life and break her heart and spirit was displayed in this movie.
“Outsiders versus Insiders” would be a good ideology to describe this movie. Tyler Perry definitely takes a rightist’s point of view for the direction of “For Colored Girls”. He fed on the emotions of the women who were emotionally defeated. One woman was dealing with a husband who was secretly gay, another had father issues and dealt with it through liquor and sleeping around, another trusted the wrong men and ended up getting raped. He emphasized the importance of the bond they created as they eventually crossed paths. One by one, their connections made them stronger and showed how even through the fire, going through all the turmoil, they are able to rise. They become each other’s backbone. The whole movie is kind of depressing but the end shows a light at the end of the tunnel. All the women appear as insiders in their own worlds when first introduced in the film, and by the end they develop a group and are their own insiders to each other.
