It’s a more depleting and physiologically arousing technique of coping than cognitive reframing, but it can be faster to implement in the short-run.
In the film “The Joy Luck Club”, the plot revolves mainly around four Asian women immigrants, the stories of their past life in China, and the stories of each woman’s Asian American daughter. Each woman came to American so their daughters would have a better life with better opportunities. One scene shows Suyuan and her daughter June at age 9 at a piano recital. Suyuan wanted to show off her daughter as a piano prodigy and disappointingly, June messes up during her performance. Waverly couldn’t help but smirk as June messed up on stage. The next day, June refuses to practice piano and tells Suyuan that she wishes she were dead like Suyaun’s previous daughters she had to abandon during war in China.
